A place to learn immersive art, as an adult
Grove is a school for people who want to make immersive work and never found the room, the tools, or the company to do it. We teach adults: no degree, no portfolio, and no prior training required. You bring the curiosity, and we bring the space, the equipment, and people who know how to use it.
Immersive art is anything you step inside rather than stand in front of. It lives across installation, projection and light, sound, sculpture and fabrication, code, and the moving body. Most of it is built by hand, and almost none of it is made alone. Grove exists to make that kind of collaborative, physical, room-scale making teachable and repeatable.
The name is the idea. A grove looks like many separate trees, but underground it is often one connected root system, sharing what it has. A school works the same way: many people, many practices, one shared ground. You come to learn a craft, and you leave part of something that keeps growing after the class ends.

Grove is organized around what the building can actually do. Every area below is supported by real equipment and dedicated space. The first term's schedule of classes is being assembled now.

Designing and building work that surrounds a viewer: the planning, materials, and staging behind a room you can walk into.

Projectors, mapping, and lighting as a medium. Shaping a space with what you can and cannot see.

Recording, composition, and spatial audio. How sound builds a place and moves a body through it.

Building the physical thing safely and well: joinery, structure, and finish in a fully equipped shop.

Software as a material. Generative systems, interaction, and sensors, taught for artists rather than engineers.

The human presence inside the work: staging, choreography, and live performance in an immersive space.

18,000 square feet in greenpoint
Grove lives at 29 nassau ave in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It is a single 18,000 square foot building given over entirely to making immersive work, with room for the messy, physical, and loud parts that most classrooms cannot hold.
Inside there are studios for hands-on work, an auditorium for performances, screenings, and full-scale installations, a wood shop for fabrication, and classrooms for teaching. The point of a space this size is that a lesson does not have to stay small: you can build the real thing, at the real scale, and then show it to a room.

community
Classes are the front door, not the whole house
A class is where most people meet grove, but the school runs on the community that forms around it. Students, instructors, and alumni stay connected in a shared Slack workspace, trade help and materials, and keep working between terms.
Alongside the class schedule there are shorter workshops and open studio time, so you can keep the momentum going after a term ends and use the space and tools you learned on. The goal is simple: you should never have to leave grove to keep making the work you came here to make.
